The Science Break Through - Ep. 1 Reprogramming the Brain for Repair - Podcast

Updated: May 11, 2023

Student - Benjamin Brake

Supervisor - Professor Benedikt Berninger

‘The Science Break Through Podcast’ brings you thought-provoking findings in UK science research and explores what it is really like to be a scientist. It is aimed at prospective science undergraduate students but is suitable for anyone with interest in science. Episode 1 takes us to the Berninger Lab at King’s College London where I talk to Professor Benedikt Berninger about the hallmarks of his lab’s research. The first two thirds of the episode focus on this research, mainly three key experiments from the lab. Experiment One produced a timelapse of astrocytes reprogramming to neurons in mouse brain cells. Experiment Two reproduced this timelapse in human cells. Experiment Three was a molecular analysis which found that reprogramming resembled processes occurring during development. For the final third of the podcast I discuss with Benedikt aspects of what it is like to be a scientist. Benedikt talks through his role as principal investigator and how this limits his time in the lab as he focuses on admin. We also discuss how essential it is that people and scientists are allowed to explore different paths where they are curious. I end the podcast with a hopeful message about pursuing your own curiosities.
