The M.I.C.R.O. Project: Getting things moving - social media campaign

Updated: May 11, 2023

Student - Chrysie Alexiou

Supervisor - Professor Deepak Srivastava

My proposed project is a series of short-form (approximately 1-min.) videos to be posted on the Srivastava Lab and WCIC Instagram and Twitter pages. These videos will give the social media pages a dynamic and interactive quality they currently lack, encouraging the public to engage actively with the content. The Instagram ‘Highlights’ feature allows the videos to be stored and organised by category. Typically, five highlights can be seen before an Instagram feed, allowing space for the relevant acronym M.I.C.R.O. to be used as video categories. M – Microscopy 101: videos about the microscopes at the WCIC, how they work, etc.; I – In the lab: videos showing the day-to-day life in the lab, e.g., a lab meeting, staining cells, etc.; C – Celebrating – videos of the lab’s significant achievements; R – Research: video summaries in lay terms of the lab’s publications; and O – Our team: video interviews of the lab members. The public will be invited to ask questions about the lab’s work to directly inspire video responses so they can become active participants in science communication. This should help bridge the gap between public opinion and the reality of neuroscience microscopy research.
