Host supervisor - Dr Tomoki Arichi’s
My project consists of a website which discusses Dr Tomoki Arichi’s inspiration for his work on the early identification and resulting management of the disabilities associated with perinatal brain injury. Dr Arichi and his team work to apply non-invasive techniques such as fMRI to characterise the development of functional activity in the human brain during fetal and preterm life and following brain injury.
My target audience is students in secondary school (age range 16-18). I am to inspire younger generations to build upon the foundation of research that Dr Arichi's lab have built so that one day we will be able to predict exactly which neonates will have neurological difficulties so that early interventions can be staged. My project explains how brain injury or deprivation can cause injury and how fMRI can be used to understand the brain and how it may develop later on in life. It also shows the fragility of neonates during the postnatal period and discusses experiments which show the critical role of simulated activity in early brain development.
