Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive motor loss. This lab is investigating how cellular stress can contribute to TDP-43 protein-pathology, which is instrumental in ALS pathogenesis. There are two major challenges: lack of engagement with the public and limited funding. I organized an ALS fundraiser-event targeting undergraduates at King’s College London in Guy’s campus.
Undergraduate students hold significant power in spreading trends and inspiring change. The flyer in the image will be used to promote the event. I designed blue t-shirts to match the ALS awareness colours and promote a sense of unity. The event will have many activities to facilitate engagement including: participating in the ice bucket challenge, a speech from the lab supervisor discussing current research, a speech from an ALS patient reflecting on their journey and a final Q&A session.
I created a brochure, link below, that will be passed around on event day. We will post pictures on social media, use trendy hashtags and challenge different universities and friends to participate in the fight against ALS. The goal of this event is to get ALS trending again, will the event be successful in raising awareness and funds for ALS research?
