The Science behind animal therapy - Infographics

Student - Alysha Lal Shewandas

Supervisor - Katie Edwards

My project is an animation showcasing the therapeutic effects of animals on physical and mental well-being, represented by physiological changes in the brain and the heart. This piece shows an individual’s heart beating in a calm and relaxed manner after spending time with animals or undergoing animal therapy. The brain maps out the different neurotransmitters which are released, giving the individual a pleasant and comfortable feeling after they have spent time with their pets. The neurotransmitters in particular are endorphins, serotonin and dopamine, chemicals which bring about positive feelings from spending time with animals. The sequence of frames shows the neurotransmitter being released and spreading from its production site in the brain to the sites of action. Each neurotransmitter’s purpose and function are also explained for a ley audience. This animation will be presented on a wall in the upcoming ‘Animal Therapy’ Exhibition at the Florence Nightingale Museum in July 2024. The audience of the museum includes tourists, nurses, family members of nurses and school children.
