Nosey Neurones

Student - Nour AlHashem

Supervisor - Matt Grubb

My project is a book that was created to bridge the gap between members of a lab and their young family members. The target audience is children between 6-9, or the "children of the lab". This book aims to generate an understanding of olfactory neuron development and regeneration which reflects my supervisor's lab's research (The Grubb Lab), which focuses on the development of post-injury regeneration. Throughout the book there are illustrations representing neuronal components and processes to showcase the mechanisms by which our olfactory system works visually. The children can follow the story thanks to "Sniffer the neuron" and his journey alongside The Grubb lab. The book features interactive elements including word-search, connect the dots and sniff-scratch to enhance understanding and the overall experience. The book is designed to take the children of the lab members through an immersive journey as they navigate the wonderful world of science to which their relatives contribute. As the story unfolds, page by page, the hope is for this story to serve as a bonding opportunity during story time before bedtime.

Will Sniffer and his friends uncover other mysterious secrets of the brain? What amazing discoveries await in the next chapter of their adventure?
