My project is a photography book entitled ‘Herbals and Pharmaceuticals’ that examines the science and history behind herbals and pharmaceutical products for the Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret. The audience is museum visitors (wide age range, typically interested in medicine) who can easily flip through the book due to its open-faced magazine format. It contains 12 comparisons of one herb and one pharmaceutical product each that can be used for the same purpose (e.g. willow bark and aspirin for headaches). Each comparison begins with a cover page consisting of a title revealing the purpose (e.g. ‘Constipation’ or ‘Wound Dressings’) and a related portrait image showcasing the museum (e.g. a vintage bassinet for ‘Colic’). Then a two-page spread is revealed including a title of the two remedies, such as ‘Willow Bark and Aspirin’, a close-up image of the herb and pharmaceutical without packaging, and a 400-800 word written explanation. The writing usually spans a third page and explains the science and history behind the remedies in an engaging and light-hearted tone. Interspersed within the writing are images of the pharmaceutical packaging and text boxes highlighting eye-catching facts. The book also includes a table of contents, an introduction, a disclaimer, a conclusion, a note from the author, and a references section.
