Brain Adventures: Journey to the Cerebellum - Comic strip

Student - Folajimi Olanrewaju

Supervisor - Richard Wingate

My project is a children’s book titled ‘Brain Adventures: Journey into the Cerebellum.’ It is based on the work done in lab of Professor Richard Wingate, which focuses on the development of the cerebellum, and how this structure has evolved within various species. The book follows a young girl called Cat, and her friend Fabio the Frog as they go on a journey into the cerebellum with their friend and guide Barker the Neuron. They travel through the three layers of the cerebellum – molecular, Purkinje, and internal granule cell layers – and learn that the cerebellum is important in balance and movement. They also learn about how the cerebellum and, specifically, the granular cell layer, has evolved in different animals. The book will be part of a book series titled "Brain Adventures,” where Cat will explore different brain regions and functions with her animal friends and learn about how these structures (and functions) may differ between her and her friends. The audience is children aged 7 and up. The book will be bifunctional, so as well as the main story, there will be footnotes containing more detailed information for older children, and parents who are reading with their young ones.
