Keloids: Healing Beyond the Surface - Magazine cover

Student - Megan Teo

Supervisor - Tanya Shaw

Most of us have seen a keloid, but how many of us actually know what a keloid is? More than just a bump on the skin, keloids are a complex dermatological condition affecting millions. This project aims to educate National Geographic readers through a comprehensive multimedia approach, weaving together the personal story of an individual living with keloids, cutting-edge research and pictures from the Shaw lab. Coupled with a visually appealing cover design to draw in casual readers and an infographic with hand-drawn diagrams outlining key facts, this project offers a holistic view of this often misunderstood condition. It extends beyond print media, incorporating a hypothetical online forum and a survey to engage readers and evaluate the effectiveness of the communication strategy, allowing for community discussion and assessing readers' understanding of keloids before and after engaging with the content. By combining a human interest angle with scientific reporting, the project seeks to captivate National Geographic's broad audience of science enthusiasts who may not have prior knowledge of keloids. This approach aims to increase public awareness and combat stigma around them, as well as allow readers to gain a deeper understanding into the science behind keloids.
